“I believe people should be free to practice their faith.”

He also has some too-late advice for how the Muslims could have gotten away with it…if only they’d been a little slicker:

Former President Bill Clinton offered a suggestion to the builders of Park51 to help defuse the controversy.

Former President Bill Clinton strongly supports Park51, the mosque and community center planned near Ground Zero, he said in an interview posted on YouTube Sunday.

“Much or even most of the controversy…could have been avoided, and perhaps still can be, if the people who want to build the center were to simply say, ‘We are dedicating this center to all the Muslims who were killed on 9/11,’” Clinton said.

Dedicating the center to the Muslim victims would show that “not all Muslims are terrorists,” Clinton said….”We’ve all forgotten: There were a lot of Muslims killed on 9/11,” Clinton said. […]

How can we forget? We’re reminded of it every day. It’s the collateral damage that comes with pursuing a cause. But yes, let’s show that not all Muslims use terrorism to actualize the Caliphate; some build shrines to the site of the terrorists’ attacks; others sue passengers who “see something and say something” (as in the Flying Imams lawsuit); others proliferate sharia financing; others give money to academia to keep it beholden to the Saudi view of things; and still others sue writers warning about their terrorist friends.

But yes indeed, Bill certainly had BETTER reassure the Muslim world that he’s with them, via this mosque controversy — especially after all those front-page pictures of his daughter marrying a guy in a yarmulke.

(Incidentally a “lot” of Muslims were not killed on 9/11. A very few were. Unless, of course, you’re counting the hijackers themselves. This is the only way one can come up with “a lot of Muslims,” which means that Clinton is lumping the terrorists with the Muslims they killed, undermining his original point. And that’s because he’s such a genius.)
